By Tait Simpson Through a combination of luck and perseverance, my life-long Senators-fan travelling companion and myself landed two tickets to watch the Ottawa Senators and Pittsburgh Penguins officially begin their Stanley Cup pursuits in Stockholm, Sweden.

The Hockey News’ Goalie Confidence Index

The Hockey News’ Goalie Confidence Index

by Ryan Kennedy - September 30, 2008 12:16 PM EDT

Using our exclusive formula, we examine each NHL club's crease duo and rank them from top to bottom.
What do you really know about the men behind the masks, the ones who patrol your team’s crease? Are they nice guys; do they talk to their goalposts; can they clear the puck well? Most importantly, when your team really needs them, can you trust your goaltender? Batting around that question in our heads, we at The Hockey News devised the Goalie Confidence Index or GCI: an objective formula concocted to measure how effectively a team can rely on its netminders.

Power Rankings - The final countdown

In the last edition of the 2007-08 Power Rankings, the Wings reclaim the No. 1 spot while the Caps and Preds make big gains.
Now that was a great regular season! Fans of the National Hockey League were treated to playoff races that went down to the wire; Alex Ovechkin played with heart and likely earned himself a Hart, while even an old dude like Jeremy Roenick proved he had something left in the tank when just about everybody was convinced he was running on fumes.

Thanks to a slow start, the post-season may not be in the cards for the Capitals, but we'll still put them in our top 16.
Give the Washington Capitals props. While they may not make the playoffs, you have to admire their late-season push to get there. The Caps have won eight of their past 10 games, including their past four in a row.

Who says the regular season has no meaning? With just a handful of games remaining, there were plenty of tilts to be played with playoff implications.
