Loose Change: Power, influence, nice posture

by Charlie Teljeur - January 1, 2009 10:06 AM EST

We break in the New Year with some close analyzing of THN's annual People of Power and Influence issue.
For those of you too lazy, too cheap or possibly too illiterate (there is help) to have picked up the Dec. 29 edition of The Hockey News, you missed a lot.

Loose Change: 'O Little Town of Bettmanhem,' a review

by Charlie Teljeur - December 18, 2008 11:35 AM EST

'Tis the season, and who doesn't love a Christmas pageant?
One of the true joys of the holiday season – besides random snowball attacks on unsuspecting postal workers – is the annual National Hockey League Christmas Pageant.

Loose Change: What I learned about Joe Sakic

by Charlie Teljeur - December 11, 2008 12:31 PM EST

His recent battle with a snowblower reveals a lot about the man...
Perhaps you read about it in Snowblowing Today or possibly Reconstructive Hand Injuries Quarterly, but just in case you missed it, the story goes something like this: Avalanche center Joe Sakic injured his hand while trying to dislodge some wet snow from his snowblower and underwent tricky reconstructive surgery Tuesday to repair five broken bones and some damaged tendons in his hand and will be out of the Colorado lineup for the next three months.

Loose Change: Dear Sean letters

by Charlie Teljeur - December 4, 2008 11:45 AM EST

We've heard what all the experts have to say, now it's time to give "others" a voice.
Sean Avery sure has some explaining to do. He’s set to meet the NHL brass in New York City Thursday, who will certainly pepper him with questions like “what were you thinking,” “do you feel you’re above league bylaws,” and “is Rachel Hunter really that hot in person?” Sean will likely flash the puppy dog eyes, admit he’s been a bad widdle boy and prepare to take a five game suspension.

Loose Change: No rhyme, no reason

by Charlie Teljeur - November 27, 2008 2:01 PM EST

It’s rhyming / Oh what timing / Think you need it? / Oh just read it...
Indulge me this week Been struck by the muse Lyrically, quite different This take on the news We try out some poetry The Change, really Loose The style reminiscent Of a drunk Dr.

Loose Change: Questionable calls

by Charlie Teljeur - November 20, 2008 11:52 AM EST

The Loose Change mailbag is opened for your reading pleasure: Even the spam email managed to leak through...
The Loose Change mailbox is again bursting at its seams. Everyone wants an expert opinion on hockey-related matters and, since I’m the only one who can’t afford a good spam filter, guess who’s answering your calls? Here now, in no particular order (other than their natural order in the periodic table), are your questions: Q: There have been claims of Montreal fans stuffing the ballot box to get more Canadiens into the lineup for the All-Star Game.

Loose Change: Standing out in the Hall

by Charlie Teljeur - November 13, 2008 12:26 PM EST

There's so much we don't know about the HHOF induction ceremonies...
First, a complaint: For the 42nd consecutive year I wasn’t invited to the Hockey Hall Of Fame ceremony. Initially it left me rather bitter, but, according to my editor, there is indeed a pecking order I have to respect and Cheryl – who sprays pesticides (part-time) at the head office - did have a good year.

Loose Change: Please remain calm

by Charlie Teljeur - November 6, 2008 12:36 PM EST

Martin Brodeur's injury has caused Devils fans to panic, so we discuss what the future may hold.
Without a doubt the biggest story in the NHL this week (aside from Kevin Lowe buying that new tie) is the unfortunate and freak accident (reaching for a cotton swab? Really?) suffered by New Jersey’s Martin Brodeur.

Loose Change: Chalk talk

by Charlie Teljeur - October 30, 2008 10:50 AM EDT

When one of Tampa's owners, Oren Koules or Len Barrie, drew up plays for their team, it nearly set a dangerous precedent.
The National Hockey League can be called a lot of things (“archaic”, “self-destructive”, “unreasonable”, “insular”, “ignorant”, “reactionary”, “obstinate”, “detached”, “inflexible”, “incompetent”, “nepotistic”, “dim-witted”, “short-sighted”, “narrow-minded”, “financially-pungent”) but “boring” isn’t one of them (although technically it was one of them, only three short years ago – the other adjectives have simply caught up).

Loose Change: Big Finnish

Loose Change: Big Finnish

by Charlie Teljeur - October 23, 2008 12:14 PM EDT

While guns aren't their thing, those Scandinavians sure love a shootout.
You’re Toronto Maple Leafs head coach Ron Wilson and you’re coaching perhaps the least-talented team in the NHL. You’re faced with the dilemma of another shootout and the very real prospect of another shootout loss simply because your goalie and shootouts get along as well as drunk guys and chainsaws.

Loose Change: NHL 'power' rankings

Loose Change: NHL 'power' rankings

by Charlie Teljeur - October 16, 2008 3:24 PM EDT

To make this space legitimate it seems there has to be some sort of power rankings, so here's a seriously not serious list.
Seems the three prerequisites for being considered a (legitimate) hockey media outlet now are: (1) Having an ex-GM on your staff who is considered “colorful” (translation: “we’re still cleaning up his mess from the seven years he ran this team”).

Loose Change: Captain, my captain

by Charlie Teljeur - October 9, 2008 11:18 AM EDT

Roberto Luongo's role as Vancouver's captain will be restricted on the ice, but off it he has free-range.
I can’t help but wonder at the rationale and logistics behind the Vancouver Canucks recently naming goaltender Roberto Luongo as their newest captain.
