With Don Sanderson losing his life after hitting is head on the ice, hockey must look at the place fighting has in the game.
Go ahead, accuse me of opportunism in the face of tragedy. I don't care much. What I do care about is that a 21-year-old man has had his life snuffed out because of a meaningless hockey fight and there is so, so much wrong with that.

The former Rocket Richard Trophy winner is on pace for a mere 24 goals, which begs the question: what to do with Kovie?
After watching Ilya Kovalchuk fail to score a goal in his ninth straight game Tuesday night, Atlanta Thrashers coach John Anderson finally acknowledged the obvious.

If at the end of his career Sidney Crosby is to be considered among the all-time best to ever play hockey, he needs to score more often.
Since Rocket Richard did it for the first time ever in 1944-45, there have been 184 total 50-goal seasons posted by 87 different players. It has been done by the truly great (Gretzky, Wayne; Lemieux, Mario), by the merely very good (Nieuwendyk, Joe; Roberts, Gary) and by the downright obscure (Richard, Jacques; Chouinard, Guy).

A 21-year-old Major League Hockey player is in a coma as a result of a fight, but will the hockey community take notice?
It was a hockey fight that started the way thousands of others have over the years, but it ended with a 21-year-old fighting for his life in a Hamilton hospital.

The hockey community has shown over and over in the past it is willing to forgive and forget and Sean Avery should get the same courtesy.
For those of you who think Sean Avery should, and will, be forever banished from the NHL landscape, I recall an exchange that took place in a dressing room at the Ivor Wynne Stadium in Hamilton during the lockout.

With an abundance of talent at the pivot position, Team Canada is going to be forced to make some tough decisions.
It’s kind of funny – not ha ha funny, but strange funny – to think less than a decade ago, there was all sorts of hand-wringing and a deep-thinker summit to explore the reasons why Canada was not producing enough skilled hockey players.

The CBA was struck while the Canadian dollar was less than 80 cents against the greenback, so it's hard for them to complain now that it's back down.
It was truly heartwarming to see Montreal Canadiens president Pierre Boivin come to the aid of Canadian team owners last week. But you have to wonder what his end game was when he carped about the sagging Canadian dollar.

Around the league there are a few players and executives who have to think about the future and make a decision on today.
It turns out Brian Burke isn’t the only NHL executive who will have some important decisions to make over the next little while. But while Burke will have to make some vital choices on where exactly he wants his parking spot at the Air Canada Centre to be, or whether he goes with the home or condo route in Toronto, others will be pondering matters of equal importance:
So you’re Detroit GM Ken Holland…you’ve got Henrik Zetterberg, Johan Franzen and Marian Hossa coming up to unrestricted free agency.

Hockey Hall of Fame undid one injustice, now it's time they focus on another and put sniper Pavel Bure in, too.
When Glenn Anderson finally enters the hallowed Hockey Hall of Fame Monday, it will mark the end of one of the great injustices in the game. Anderson deserved to be enshrined among the all-time greats a long time ago and for reasons only it knows, the epitome of hockey’s old boy’s network kept him out.

Don't count on Toronto making the right decision on Sundin... stars getting testy in Dallas... and Larionov's surprise friendship.
Some Monday musings for your dining and dancing pleasure:
When faced with a decision, the Toronto Maple Leafs have historically been a franchise that has been uncannily consistent in pursuing the path of least resistance.

The league may never institute policies like bigger nets or banning blocked shots, but at least they're thinking progressively.
Can you imagine what kind of response guys such as Mike Gillis or Brian Lawton would have received last week if they had proposed what Bob Gainey did at the GM meetings in Chicago?
They would have been laughed out of the room and would have been vilified in the media for suggesting the league look at the possibility of penalizing players who leave their feet to block shots.

While naming Steve Yzerman as executive director of Team Canada wasn't a bad move, it wasn't the best they could have made.
For Ken Holland, it’s all about winning and it’s what he continually preaches to his players and coaches. Every move he contemplates, every moment he spends working, is directed toward the goal of winning hockey games and, ultimately, the Stanley Cup.

What jersey will John Tavares be wearing at the end of this season?
"There's no greater honor, no greater feeling than standing on that blueline with your teammates representing this country. I'll remember this the rest of my life."
- Canada's John Tavares after winning the country's fifth straight World Junior Championship gold medal.
